I was in Pittsburgh for a few days a couple of weeks ago. This trip was put together on short notice as other plans fell through, and, consequently our expectations were low. Indeed, we did not hit any home runs, but we found enough stuff to keep ourselves occupied. The vibe was loose, and the focus became on having fun rather than keeping a strict schedule. Pittsburgh itself was happy to oblige, having no shortage of great bars and restaurants to choose from. The city itself was also a great photographic subject, but that will be for the next post.
We spent a lot of time driving around, the kind where you cruise through different neighborhoods looking for things to shoot, abandoned or not. That’s how we found this house atop a hill and this cemetery overlooking Mckeesport, PA.

The rest of these are from various places around the city and its suburbs, including schools, a train station, and a boarding house.

This trip was also a reminder that a good shot can be found anywhere, at any time. A location can be an otherwise uninspiring walk through, but can still have things that turn out to be good photographs. Such was the case with this simple staircase shot in a long abandoned and grafittied school. The colors, light and composition made this simple shot my favorite of the trip.

Thank you for stopping by. Some fun Pittsburgh skyline shots in the next post!
