It is a perverse irony that when life gets hard, be it from overwork or depression, the very things that provide succor and distraction can lose their appeal. So it became, for me, with photography. It has been half a year since I’ve posted anything here, and what better way to get off the schneid than by posting shots from a visit last winter to the University of Chicago. Plus, it’s a fun juxtaposition to showcase these snowy photos while it currently reads 95° outside.
The U of C is perhaps best known world wide for its imprint on the world of business, with the Chicago school of economics originating there. But for our purposes here, it’s the campus itself that is noteworthy. The original quadrangles were built in the 1890’s in a gothic style that consciously aped the much older Oxford University in England. The contrast between it and the surrounding neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago is almost jarring.
We visited on a cold and snowy day in January, weather that actually made the building even more goth. Here’s six shots from that day.
