My Canadian friend Holly was in town last month, and, since had never explored Chicago, we made plans to meet up for a day of shooting. She had also found out about an abandoned, but still accessible, stretch of Route 66. It was shut down to vehicular traffic a few years ago as an adjacent quarry was making the road unstable. I dimly remember driving that stretch of road years ago, and I don’t think I was aware that it had once carried the storied highway. So we began our day there, as the early morning’s gloom began breaking up into the mostly sunny sky we would have for most of our day.
As we walked onto the crumbling asphalt, we were greeted by quite a few turkey buzzards. One by one they would eventually leave, but many would posture at us, wings spread in a show of annoyance.

The road itself, wild and overgrown:

In the next post: the rest of our day in Gary, which even had a few surprises for me.
