A winding road takes you up a green mountain. A colorful signpost, left over from Soviet times, announces your arrival in Signagi (alternately spelled Sighnaghi). This strategic spot has been settled since paleolithic times, but the town as it appears today dates only to the turn of the 18th century when king Heraklius II built a fortress here and sponsored settlement of the surrounding town.
The town is picturesque enough, but it is its setting that is really worth the trip. There are dramatic valleys to the west:
But it’s to the north and east that the real money shot is. The hillside drops off steeply, giving way to a vast expanse of plains and farmland. The effect is that the town seems to be floating high above the surrounding countryside.
