It has been about six months since I visited Mexico City. Since then I have thought a lot about how much the Germans seem to dislike tailors, a profession they apparently thought entirely run by miserable wretches. The German word for tailor, schneider, can be used in idioms such as “er ist ein Schneider” which means that someone looks sick, but literally translates to “he is a tailor”.
There are other expressions, but it is the source of the American saying that has been rattling around my head for a while now. In a German card game called skat (the jokes write themselves) a player having a breakout hand is said to aus dem Schneider sein, which literally means that they are “out of the tailor.” In this sense of breaking a slump it eventually became the phrase “to get off the schneid” and is often used in baseball, a sport that loves its quirky expressions.
So here I am, after a fruitless half-year of general malaise, getting off the schneid. I have so, so many photos to catch up on and share, but we will start here, at the absolutely stunning Vasconcelos library in CDMX. You want to learn something about this building? Fuck off to Wikipedia. This here blog is about me processing my mental illness into florid language and pretty pictures. Enjoy.
