Local legend holds that a man living on an island in Mexico City’s Xochimilco district began hanging dolls around his property as a way of appeasing spirits after finding a dead girl in a canal. The island would gain notoriety as filming location for a popular movie in 1943, and the man would go on collecting dolls until his death in 2001, after which his family opened it to the public. Today, many call the island haunted; some visitors claim to hear whispers or to see the dolls move their eyes. While I remain firmly agnostic on these legends, I believe that it is a great place to visit, and makes for some interesting photography.
The island called Isla de las Muñecas has dolls everywhere: hanging from branches, nailed to trees, suspended by wires, and all over the shack where the old man of the legend is said to have lived. Here’s what I saw on my visit here earlier this year.
