You don’t really go to Iceland for the urbex scene. However, once there, there are a couple spectacular abandonments you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The country’s first steel ship was beached and left as landmark at the tip of a fjord. It gets regular coats of paint, so it isn’t the rusted-out hulk you might expect. Iceland’s culture and economy is very tied to the sea, so this makeshift icon just feels right.
The second, and probably more famous wreck is that of a downed US navy DC-3 aircaft. Atlas Obscura has a write-up on it if you want the backstory, but all you need to know is that an airplane rotting on a black gravel beach is photography catnip.
And, modesty be damned, I think I got a better shot of it than any of the featured photos on that site!

Beautiful! What a find too, must have been wild to stumble across this. Thanks for providing the link to the AO article, I was wondering what the backstory was. My next comment was going to echo your last sentence… Maybe you should send them your photo. 😉

Ha! And their shots kind of irked me because they were largely people posing on the wreck. When we were there we had to wait for a break between all the duckface selfies and bros climbing the plane. It took forever.
