With Covid in full swing last fall, my wife Shawna and I were looking for a pandemic-appropriate getaway. We decided on a mountain cabin rental outside of Fairplay (the inspiration for the South Park cartoon series) and spent the better part of the week hiking, driving scenic roads, or bumming around the cabin. Of course, I brought my camera gear and came away with about 600 shots, which I’m belatedly getting around to editing and posting now.
There were many maps and local guidebooks the owners had thoughtfully left out on the living room table, and one of them mentioned a curious cemetery outside the nearby town of Alma. Still active, and not particularly big, the compelling thing about it is that is essentially in a forest. Not just outside it, or in some clearing, but among the trees. The townspeople also are creative with the grave markers, many of which feature wrought-iron fencing or unusual markers. So, on a crisp and clear October afternoon, we wandered this unique sylvan necropolis.
